affreschi della Madonna Piemonte
L´affresco tardo quattrocentesco di fronte al quale si succedono i “mirabili eventi” è opera di un
anonimo pittore piemontese ed è la sola immagine conservata di un trittico di cui facevano parte
S. Giovanni Battista al centro e
S. Antonio Abate alla sinistra. Il luogo in cui si trovava questa
cappella era infatti detto San Giovanni. Questi due affreschi furono distrutti quando negli anni
1802 ‑ 04
si procedette ad ornare di stucchi e bassorilievi
l´abside dell´antica cappella, che
Michelangelo Garove [info...]
preservò dietro
all´altare. Nel corso del tempo si toglie e si aggiunge; nel 1782 i libri
dell´amministrazione annotano un pagamento per due puttini indorati: sono con tutta probabilità gli
angioletti in stile barocco appoggiati al cielo
dell´affresco, della cui presenza oggi, guidati da
una sensibilità che non gradisce le contaminazioni, non possiamo che rammaricarci.

Occorre leggere l´affresco nella sua gotica coerenza simbolica.
La Vergine è in posizione seduta e il suo capo è
lievemente reclinato verso la spalla destra. Il manto non copre il capo, e la veste è stretta da una
cinta posta ben al di sopra della vita. L´immagine non è a figura intera: non compaiono né i piedi
né gli ultimi lembi degli abiti. Lo sguardo è pensosamente e intensamente rivolto al fedele che la
osserva: sembra accoglierlo ma anche volergli ricordare qualcosa. Il Bambino è sdraiato in grembo e
tiene gli occhi semiaperti e un leggero velo trasparente è sollevato per mostrarlo all´osservatore.
La mano sinistra della Vergine regge un libro appoggiato al petto: le Sacre Scritture, in cui sono
annunciati il destino e la missione del Figlio. Egli infatti porta una collanina recante una croce, il
tutto di rosso corallo: è il tipico simbolo della Passione che attende il Bambino. Ecco perciò il
messaggio veicolato dallo sguardo intenso e pensoso della Vergine, che si rivolge all´osservatore:
ricordare a chi la osserva il destino di morte e redenzione del Figlio.
